The Electrical System Of Human Body
A stun gun is a legal electrical non lethal self defense weapon that puts out a high voltage but low amperage shock that temporarily disables an assailant. Many people think that electricity will kill you and certainly if you get struck by lightning you probably will die. One ampere of electricity is enough to kill. Stun guns use 1-3 milliamps. The body needs electricity to function properly. The brain sends electrical signals (neurotransmitters) to different body parts to make them work.
Principles Of Operation
The idea behind a stun gun is to disrupt this system. It does this by basically overloading these signals causing the body shut down. It becomes confused and unbalanced. Temporary partial paralysis sets in because the brain's signals to the muscles become overloaded and thus the muscles can't move.
A stun gun can also tell the body thru its electrical impulses to work very hard for a short duration. This completely depletes the blood sugar (energy) level in the body making it too weak to move.
The high voltage which ranges form 20,000 to 975,000 is enough to go thru the thickest of clothing and skin but at only 3 milliamps will not do any long term damage to the body.
The Mechanics Of A Stun Gun
The mechanical principle behind a stun gun is remarkably simple. It uses 9 volt batteries, transformers to increase voltage and reduce amperage, an oscillator to produce the pulsing action needed, a capacitor to build up the charge, and electrodes to deliver the charge.
Most stun-gun models these days consist of two pairs of electrodes: an inner pair & an outer pair. The outer pair acts as the charge electrodes and is spaced at good distance apart to facilitate flow of current as soon as outside conductor gets inserted.
In case the current is unable to flow across these electrodes, it flows to the inner pair, the test electrodes. These electrodes are close enough that the electric current can leap between them. The moving current ionizes the air particles in the gap, resulting into the production of visible spark & crackling noise. The intention is to work as a deterrent.
It alerts an attacker & tells him that you are armed. This alone has saved many an attack. A savvy assailant does not want to mess with 975,000 volts of electricity. Some stun guns rely on the element of surprise, rather than warning. These are stun guns disguised in various shapes such as cell phones, flashlights, batons, or hand held devices such as a blackberry. There is a wide range of stun weapons in use today. Standard handheld stun gun, the taser gun & the liquid stun gun are the three most popular devices.
