Stun Gun-A Star Is Born!

It seems like only yesterday that James Kirk, aka Captain Kirk of the "Starship Enterprise" from the long running TV show "Star Trek", admonished his crew before they were transported to an unknown destination to put their phasers on STUN. To most of us who remember that show it was the first time we heard of a weapon that could stun an assailant.

How scary is it that Star Trek started 40 years ago in 1966?

More recently in the mega hit TV series "24" Chloe O'Brien zapped an unwelcome male who wouldn't leave her alone with her stun gun.

The history of the stun gun is a little less dramatic than "Star Trek" or "24" but interesting nonetheless. Let's take a look at how this non-lethal self-defense weapon got started and how it evolved into the world's premier self-defense weapon.

From the early 1900's inventors were constantly looking for ways to make the cattle prod more effective. At its inception the cattle prod had to be plugged into a wall outlet. Not too effective! They found ways to make them easier to put together, easier to use, and eventually portable by the 1940's.

By the 1950's inventors, who were trying to meet the demands of the public, were coming up with different marketing ideas like the "postman's friend" and "policeman's club and restraining device". So it was then that the idea of a self-defense weapon was born. It was still a cattle prod.

Also in the 1950's as civil unrest started to proliferate in the south, government agencies started looking for effective ways to control the crowds associated with the struggle of civil rights. The cattle prod had a new use-crowd and riot control. However there was a backlash when humans got indignant at being controlled by a CATTLE PROD. Thus, the birth of Stun Technology.

By the 1970's they were being used on airlines against terrorists. Creative minds started marketing these stun batons as non-lethal self-defense weapons against muggers and rapists. Police departments used them in prisons for crowd control.

The transition from cattle prod to non-lethal self-defense weapon was complete. Today stun guns are widely accepted as the premier non-lethal self-defense weapons by individuals the world over. Police departments across the United States are armed with them as an alternative to deadly force. The US Army uses them as well.

They are popular because they are an effective deterrent against assault, rape, robbery, and kidnapping all of which occur at an alarming rate in this country. They are cost effective, easy to carry and conceal, and easy to use.
