Why is it illegal to have a stun gun in a major city?

I live in Philadelphia and I was shopping online to buy a stun gun and after I went to purchase it said that stun guns are illegal to own in philadelphia and some other cities as well, including new york! I was outraged when I read this because it violates my rights as an American. How can someone tell me that I cannot have something to defend myself when just the other day, I was mugged on my way home from work! This is ridiculous. In my opinion I have no choice but to follow the old saying: "I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6."

Because these pro-gun control/anti weapon baboons miss the point, its not about the gun, its about self defense and not being a slave to the state.
